THE SYDNEY GARDENS

Governor Macquarie founded the Botanic Gardens of Sydney on this site in 1816 as part of the Governor's Domain.The Royal Botanic Gardens is located on the eastern edge of the central business district, bounded by Macquarie Street, the Cahill Expressway and Mrs. Macquaries Road. The adjacent open parkland of the Domain surrounds the Gardens. The National Herbarium of New South Wales is located within the Gardens. The Sydney Gardens covers 30 hectares in a spectacular setting on the shores of Sydney Harbor, with 10,960 types of plants from Australia and overseas on display.

 

 

Mrs. Macquaries Point and Chair mark one of the popular photographic spots in Sydney with views across the Harbor to the Opera House and Harbor Bridge. The Governor's wife had the chair fashioned out of the rock so she could relax and watch the passing ships.
